IDWF – an affiliate of the IUF and WIEGO

30 July, 2014, IDWF | IDWF

“I feel humbled by the IDWF's wish to be part of the IUF. Domestic workers' courageous and successful struggle for recognition of their rights is a source of inspiration not only for the IUF but for the labour movement worldwide",

Ron Oswald, General Secretary, IUF said.

In May this year, the IDWF affiliated to the International Union of Food, Agricultural, Hotel, Restaurant, Catering, Tobacco and Allied Workers’ Associations (IUF) and, in July, to Women in Informal Employment: Globalizing and Organizing (WIEGO), thus formalizing its relationship with its two close long-standing partners.

Both the IUF and WIEGO have been instrumental in the birth and subsequent development of the IDWF – from a “Network” to a “Federation” today, as cited by the General Secretary, Elizabeth Tang in her Activity Report at the Founding Congress of the IDWF in Montevideo, Uruguay, October 2013.

WIEGO, a key member of the organizing committee of the first-ever international conference of domestic workers at Amsterdam in 2006, together with the IUF (and the NGO, IRENE) took responsibility for a project to build a global network of domestic workers.  It led to the launch of the International Domestic Workers Network in 2009.

Since then, the IUF, WIEGO and the IDWN, together with other partners had been campaigning and advocating relentlessly for the adoption of the ILO Convention 189.  At the same time, they have been working closely with the domestic workers leaders to build the organizations.  It involves both political and technical support in various forms – from fundraising, providing language translation, to education and training provisions and to alliance-building.   The successful convening of the Founding Congress of the IDWF - a historical moment for the domestic workers movement- is a testimony to the strong partnership between the IDWF-IUF-WIEGO.

Many IUF affiliates have a long history of organizing domestic workers and it was therefore natural to maintain and reinforce the links between the IDWF and IUF. Its Executive Committee in May 15 and 16 passed the decision to accept the IDWF as a Special Group.
